Next time you see a project in a magazine, look at the emptiness. Don’t see it as “minimalism.” See it as a laboratory where the most important variable-the human being-has been removed so the designer can pretend they’ve mastered the environment.

Then, imagine the sound of eighty-seven people entering that frame. If the image starts to feel uncomfortable when you add the noise, the design isn’t finished. It’s just photographed.

The real test is for the person at the desk who can actually hear the person on the other end of the line. That’s the one thing Marcus and his Leica can’t give you. You have to design for that in the dark, in the noise, and in the plenum, long before the Sunday sun ever comes up.
